Tucked down the end of a rural lane, nestled next to a sheep farm and buried in the folds of motherhood, my life at times seemed as far removed from my expat, travel-writing Hong Kong dwelling 20s as could be. But something that started as a distraction for my eldest’s toddler tantrums evolved into a career calling - writing children’s stories.

I found myself diving into the magical, improbable yet inspiring world of fairytales and in a bid to learn more about the craft, studied creative writing for children, wrote a middle grade book and worked with agents. But whilst my brain was mastering plot and pacing, my heart was still being stolen by the moon, whipped into the sky by fairies, plundered by pirates and rescued by a brave boy and his much-loved teddy. 

Fable was always going to be the result

I’ve always believed every child has a shining value that makes them unique and that if I can find it, and make it dance across the page in a magical tale that shows them how truly special they are, then they’ll see themselves how we see them, as truly astonishing. So, I see these books not just as bedtime stories that your child will treasure but as confidence boosters, reminders of who your child is and why you love them and that, no matter what life throws at them, that they have the power to face it.

It's been an absolute privilege that in making these books I get to work with the most talented illustrator and designer, and my best friend, Natalie, whose drawings, lettering and design make the Fable stories the visual works of art that they are. I may write the stories, but she brings them to life.

Fable & hope

Fable has always been about creating a high-end premium gifting item, but since its conception I have always known I wanted it to have a charitable side. That for every book sold, one should be donated. Whilst I know the children who will be receiving these stories will love them, I believe there are children who truly need them, who need to have laid down on paper how truly special they are – to see their strength, wonder and superpowers summed up in a tale of bravery, daring or magic.

So, behind the scenes we are always working with hospitals and children’s charities, finding children who need their spirits lifted with a story made especially for them.
